The role of psychosocial care in the treatment of oncological diseases was discussed by doctors and experts during the ESSO congress

The chairperson of the Association of patients with oncological diseases, Evgenia Alexandrova, who is also a member of the Governing Board of the European Coalition of Cancer Patients, is involved in 41 congress at the European Society of Surgical Oncology, which took place between 19 and 21 October 2022 r. in France.

"Close cooperation between the medical team and the psychosocial support team is a necessary condition for a good outcome of the disease", Evgenia Alexandrova commented during her presentation. In her presentation, the president of APOZ commented on the main challenges of an emotional and psychological nature for cancer patients and their doctors, as well as the experiences of relatives of cancer patients.

The Cancer Patients Association pioneered the community-based psychosocial care model for cancer patients and their loved ones. With a project, realized in 2010 – 2011 g., the association introduces non-medical care in three medical facilities - in Sofia, Burgas and Plovdiv. Within the program more than 300 cancer patients received individual psychological counseling, as well as having the opportunity to join experience sharing groups. Later, the association formed the first team of the Center for Non-Medical Care at the private Ajibadem City Clinic.
